What To Do If Temporary Crown Falls Off?

If the temporary crown comes off, it is recommended to contact your dentist immediately to see if they are available. Please schedule an appointment to have the crown fixed securely. They will prioritize the matter and re-cement it.

While waiting, clean the crown by gently washing it with lukewarm water, making sure to carefully inspect it for any signs of damage. To protect it from contamination and damage, store it in a compact plastic container or bag.

1. Start by staying calm

It is common for patients undergoing dental crown procedures to occasionally have the temporary crown fall out, which can be concerning. There is no need to worry, as this situation often results in higher levels of stress. Take a moment to relax and understand that there is no reason to be worried.

While it may cause some discomfort, this issue is not permanent.

2. Fix the temporary crown with toothpaste

If you are unable to contact a dentist or do not have denture glue, there is no need to worry. Reattaching your temporary crown can be easily done. A recommended alternative is to use toothpaste, chapstick, or vaseline to keep it in place.

  • To prevent bacterial buildup, it is essential to thoroughly clean both the inside of your temporary crown and your tooth before using it.
  • Remove your temporary crown before going to bed or eating a meal.
  • Ensure that the temporary crown fits perfectly, has a smooth bite, and offers complete comfort.

3. Check for any rough edges

To check the area where your tooth lost its crown, gently run your tongue over it to feel for any cement residue. If any roughness is noticed, apply a small amount of orthodontic wax for relief. This wax is available at local drugstores and can be used as a temporary solution if you are unable to immediately access dental care. By using this wax, you can protect your cheek and tongue from potential irritation or injury caused by sharp edges.

4. Please remember to rinse your mouth regularly

To maintain cleanliness and protect the exposed tooth, it is important to rinse regularly. It is recommended to rinse with care and gentleness, rather than using a strict approach.

5. Refrain from chewing on the side with the crown

It is important to avoid putting pressure on or exposing the crown area to food since it doesn’t have a biting surface. It is important to note that the exposed tooth may lack stability compared to a permanent tooth, so it is best to avoid any shifting as even a small movement can greatly affect the fit of the permanent crown. It is not recommended to bite down on the side with the temporary crown as it is still unstable, even if attempts have been made to repair it using toothpaste or alternative methods.

Temporary crowns often become loose, so it is not recommended to continue using them without professional help. Please note that the tricks mentioned above for securing the crown should only be used in situations where you are unable to immediately contact your dentist, such as during nighttime or weekends.

If you experience any discomfort, it is recommended to follow the guidelines mentioned earlier and consider taking over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). These drugs help with pain relief and also help reduce swelling and inflammation.

Why Temporary Crowns Fall Off

The crowns are designed to be removable, and there are several reasons why they may detach prematurely. Neglecting dental care, experiencing recurrent tooth decay, and consuming sticky and thick foods are all factors that can contribute to this issue. However, it is important to consider the potential for incorrect installation by the dentist or changes in the bone structure underneath the crown since it was initially placed. Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding or clenching, can contribute to the dislodgement of a crown.

Is it possible to eat if my temporary crown falls out?

Yes, it is recommended to be cautious of your food choices before visiting the dentist. It may be advisable to choose softer food options during this period. It is advisable to avoid consuming gum, hard candies, caramel, pizza, bagels, and tough meats like steak.

Is denture adhesive safe to use for a temporary crown?

If you are experiencing pain and swelling, it is best to avoid reattaching a temporary crown. Instead, it is recommended to wait for a dental appointment. We have received reports from multiple patients regarding the discomfort caused by their temporary crown falling off. In these cases, we advise against trying to reattach it.

If you are unable to see your dentist right away but do not experience any pain or swelling, there is no need to worry. To fix your dislodged crown, please follow the instructions provided.

1. INSPECT THE CROWN AND CLEAN IT.

Carefully examine the crown, specifically the gumline, to evaluate its condition for any indications of damage or durability. If you observe that the temporary crown is cracked or has come off, it is advised not to attempt to reattach it yourself. Please schedule an appointment with your dentist at your earliest convenience. If the crown is still intact, inspect it carefully for any food or debris residue. Clean it thoroughly using a toothpick or paperclip, and allow it to air dry afterwards.

2. GATHER THE SUPPLIES.

The essential items that you need are a high-quality denture adhesive, a fresh kitchen towel, a clean plastic spoon, floss for oral hygiene, a Q-tip, and some warm water.

3. PLACE THE CROWN.

Apply the denture glue to the area where the crown will touch the tooth’s base. To moisten the tooth, use a Q-tip that has been dampened with warm water. Place the crown on the tooth and press down firmly for a short time.

4. ENSURE THE FIT.

It is important to properly position the tooth before the adhesive sets. To achieve this, apply pressure by biting down and if any discomfort occurs, repeat the procedure.

5. REMOVE THE EXCESS.

After placing the crown, use floss to remove any excess material and then rinse your mouth with warm water. Currently, you have a securely attached temporary crown.

You need to wait for about sixty minutes for it to be properly settled, after which you can consume and drink without any restrictions.

Is it possible to prevent a crown from falling out?

If the crown in your mouth doesn’t fit properly or if the cement holding it has weakened, there are only a few options. Taking a proactive approach to crown maintenance can help prevent it from becoming loose.

Researchers recommend following a few guidelines:

  • avoid chewing ice.
  • be careful when consuming sticky or chewy foods.
  • brush your teeth twice a day.
  • floss regularly for good oral hygiene.
  • remove plaque from the area where your gum meets your tooth and the crown by using an interdental brush, which is larger and fits comfortably between teeth, similar to floss.

Dentists may recommend using a mouthpiece to protect your dental crown and other teeth from teeth grinding during the night.
