HOW TO OVERCOME DENTAL ANXIETY

There’s no shame in having a little bit of anxiety – feelings are feelings, after all. If you need to talk about how you feel, do yourself a favor and indulge. You don’t want any tension to build up, because it will affect the entire area of your health that you have to work on during this appointment. The best way for you to deal with anxiety at the dentist is by talking about your concerns. Engaging in communication is key here; one reason why you might be anxious is due to the fear of not knowing what’s happening between the beginning and end stages – but if you can get everything out in the open in regards to your schedule, it will go a long way towards alleviating some of those pesky stress levels everyone gets when they have dental work scheduled!

DENTAL ANXIETY TECHNIQUES

If you’re anxious about going to the dentist, take comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. Many people are hesitant to go to the dentist because they’re scared of pain or they’re not sure what the dentist will find. But there are some things you can do to ease your anxiety and make your visit more comfortable.

Anxiety is a feeling that many people often get when they are told to do something new, which is why it’s important to share your feelings with someone. Your dentist and the dental team can’t help you, if they don’t know what kind of needs you have. Here are some tips:

  • Tell your dentist about any anxiety or fears of dental visits before starting treatment by speaking with the receptionist on the phone or in person when making an appointment for example; be honest about bad experiences from past appointments too and ask them for suggestions on coping strategies.

  • Don’t be afraid to speak up – sometimes knowing what will happen beforehand can alleviate any fear there may be for unknown things.

  • Agreeing on a signal like raising your hand during treatment time so that anyone helping out knows when a break would feel good could also work!

USING MINDFULNESS TECHNIQUES FOR DENTAL ANXIETY

Relaxation starts in the mind, so it’s important to try deep breathing exercises. Deep breaths help release tension in your muscles.

Count your breaths:

Count your breath as you inhale slowly and then exhale for the same number of counts 5 times while waiting or during breaks when sitting down with a dentist.

Do a body scan:

Do a body scan by releasing tension starting from the head and working downwards towards the toes focusing on each muscle group one at a time like the forehead, cheeks neck, and feet for about 10 seconds per area using slow deliberate movements that make every muscle feel heavy.
